Department of Sociology Awards

The Department of Sociology offers undergraduate awards that highlight undergraduate students who excel academically, demonstrate a high potential for professional development in sociology, and are working to promote community service and public engagement.

Barrow Scholarship

The Phyllis Jenkins Barrow Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating major who is a Georgia resident and has excelled academically.

W.E.B. DuBois Award

Our W.E.B DuBois Award promotes community service and public engagement through academic contributions (e.g., a term paper, academic presentation, research proposal). This can take many forms, including:

•    Original scholarship advancing the interests of underrepresented or underserved students and communities
•    Creating and promoting original content (e.g., podcasts, videos, flyers) that highlights contributions to the goals of community service and public engagement

Ida B. Wells Award

Our Ida B. Wells Award promotes outreach and service to the community and can take many forms, including:

•    Planning and coordinating volunteer efforts in the local Athens community or students’ home communities
•    Creating and promoting original content (e.g., podcasts, videos, flyers) that highlights contributions to the goals of community service and public engagement

Ray Payne Award

The Ray Payne Award is awarded annually to a graduating major whose performance demonstrates commitment to sociology and a high potential for professional development in the discipline.
